A.

This poem was inspired by Ted Hughes’ sculpture of a Jaguar, pictured below.

A.

Ted-Hughes-made-the-jagua-007
Head bowed, face to the ground,
his neck is stiff from pent-up shit,
frustration.
Grasping at something
that isn’t there –
Neck too stiff to reach if it was.
Locked muscles, shoulder blades,
arched back, steel rage,
Like a jaguar
moulded
around a lead pipe,
he cannot move
without breaking;
Between two eyes,
the letter A,
adulterer, Assia, a first.
He cannot stretch or moan or roar,
he cannot bend without breaking.
