A splurge of defiance that became a poem…

I saw something today which got me thinking. There’s so much to say on the subject of gender equality and its origins, that I’m not even going to attempt to put my thoughts on paper. Instead, I’ve written a very quick poem which I think sums it up nicely:

Today —
I saw a little girl frog-leap,
then totter to regain balance,
hands scrambling at concrete.

Today —
That little girl’s mother snarled,
told her not to bend that way,
not to invite the world up her skirt,

not to – –

even as her brother was bent
in two, head to the ground
and bum to the sky.

Today that little girl was bound
by the dress her brother
would never have to wear.
